Jessica Mauboy ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ Music Video
by David
My eyes are watering now in some vain attempt to cleanse itself after watching this mess.
Jessica Mauboy, I wanted so much for this video to be fierce, mighty and slick. How it ended up looking like a scrapped Payless Shoes commercial, we’ll never know.
Director Hype Williams (whose cred videography boasts Beyonce‘s ‘Video Phone’ and Christina Aguilera‘s ‘Not Myself Tonight’) missed the mark by a mile. It’s got nothing to do with budget but everything to do with adequate editing and incriminatingly bad fashion.
Here are three strikes our gurl Jess could’ve done without:
1) This outfit.
I AM STUNNED… JUST STUNNED. WHA…WHAT IS THIS? It’s like someone had created a body suit inspired by the worst 90s happy pants motif. And that material. Is she off to the Tour De France? Heinous doesn’t even begin to cover it.
2) Powerpoint animation.
This spiraling forward clip art animation reminds me of an effect I used in my year nine English presentation. It’s almost as if the director was trying to tell us something. Nothing good can come of a video with this kind of opening sequence.
3) Snoop The Shoe Fitter.
I hear Biggie hollering from beyond the grave for Snoop‘s street cred to be revoked. What kind of self-respecting gangsta would don this fuckery and fit stilettos? Note the wrist bands they’ve got him wearing.
Footnote:
Alarm bells must’ve been going off at Jess HQ because ‘Get ‘Em Girls’ isn’t exactly setting charts and radio ablaze. Her people have confirmed that a new single, ‘Saturday Night’ (featuring Ludacris), will be issued soon. Jess‘s Get ‘Em Girls album arrives on 5 November – please, restore my faith.
