Cheryl Cole has officially got herself an Australian hit. Her breakthrough single ’3 Words’ has risen to #5 on our charts this week giving Universal Music Australia further incentive to push her solo album of the same name. A triumphant moment for all Chezza and Girls Aloud fans in this country.

Angus & Julia Stone celebrates their very first Australian #1 album this week with Down The Way. The duo’s last full-length album, A Book Like Us, peaked at #5 back in 2007.

Broken Bells‘ self-titled debut album enters our Aussie charts at #20 this week. I’m interested to see how this project – a collaboration between The Shins‘ lead singer James Mercer and Dangermouse of Gnarls Barkley – is embraced by Shins fans. You can hear our Diff’rent Strokes podcast about the Broken Bells‘ album here.

Jennifer Lopez‘s ‘Louboutins’ may have climbed to #2 on the US Dance/Club charts this week but no record label’s showing love to J.Lo and her Love? project  yet.

Lady Gaga is has once again dominated the UK singles and album charts this week with ‘Telephone’ and The Fame climbing to the top spots. The whole Fame juggernaut (including sales of The Fame Monster EP) has now sold over 1.7 million copies int he UK alone.

Should the Sugababes be a little alarmed? After a four month delay, you’d think the hype and anticipation riding off the back of a new line-up and three hit singles would translate to, at least, a Top 10 debut for the album… but no. Sweet 7 enters the UK charts at #14 this week.

The Glee Cast now has two compilations rocking the UK Top 10. The latest release Glee – The Music – Season One Volume 2 leaps from #91 to #2 on the UK charts this week while Volume 1 moves up to #6.

Gabriella Cilmi – Ten

This is not the flaming disco album I ordered.

Instead, what I got from Gabriella Cilmi‘s new album Ten was just mildly-flavoured 80s synth pop with some rations of disco.

You see, when you’re going around hyping your record and citing Donna Summer, the Bee Gees and Giorgio Moroder as your references – people are going to expect something larger than life.

Truth is, apart from the dynamite ‘On A Mission’, most of the tracks on Ten will pass you by as pleasantly decorative arrangements of percolating synths and disco bass lines.

Vocally, Gabriella could’ve devoured most of these tracks and taken it to another level.

Instead, songs like the earnest power ballad ‘Defender’ are rendered forgettable at best, unless someone like Leona Lewis steps up to the mic.

Having said that, there are some surprising growers on the album.

The driving ballad ‘Robots’ waxes lyrical about a love between flawless beings, while the cyber cool ‘Love Me Cos You Want To’ rekindles the moody synth pop of Rachel Stevens‘ ‘Nothing Good About This Goodbye’.

Elsewhere, the retroglam ‘Superhot’ is easily Gabriella’s ‘I Feel Love’ and ‘Invisible Girl’ packs as good a punch as any Pink single.

Although it didn’t hit me with the instant gratification I was expecting, give it a couple of spins and Ten should unravel as an effortlessly cool nouveau-80s record in its own right.

Adam Lambert has officially made his mark on the Australian charts.

After a flash promo tour here last week, which conveniently coincided with Sydney’s Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, Lambert’s single ‘Whataya Want From Me’ debuts at #26 and the album, For Your Entertainment, enters at #18.

Loved it when Mel and Kochie introduced him as “the controversial American Idol star”. Is it still a big deal to see two people of the same sex kiss on stage?

Simon Cowell‘s Helping Haiti charity single may be the #1 selling single in stores this week, but it’s no where to be found in the overall ARIA singles charts.

The cover of ‘Everybody Hurts’ – featuring the likes of Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle and Robbie Williams – is the fastest selling charity single in the UK, shifting 453,000 copies in its first week.

Young Justin Bieber makes the biggest leap into the UK Top 40 this week with ‘Baby’. The single, featuring Ludacris, went from #188 to #3, outselling new entries by Gabriella Cilmi, Goldfrapp and the Glee Cast.

Gabriella Cilmi‘s ferocious ‘On A Mission’ enters the UK charts at #9 this week. Her retro glam album Ten is due next week and the rumoured second single, ‘Hearts Don’t Lie’, is already garnering some radio rotation here – charting at #81 on our airplay charts.

UK R&B star Taio Cruz made a record-breaking leap from #53 to #1 on the US Billboard charts this week with ‘Break Your Heart’. The song, drafted as the single to launch Taio across the Atlantic, was originally offered to Cheryl Cole. Girlfriend should’ve returned his call.

Kelis has claimed the #1 spot on the US Dance/Club charts with ‘Acapella’. The David Guetta-produced track is the lead single from her forthcoming album Fleshtones. Expect the ‘Acapella’ video to be out any week now.

Utada‘s ‘Dirty Desire’ looks like it’s exiting the Dance/Club Top 25 this week after peaking at #16 a couple of weeks ago.

LaRoux‘s ‘Bulletproof’ has cracked the US Billboard charts at #92 this week. Meanwhile, their oft-rival synth pop artist Little Boots sees her album Hands debut at #7 on the Heatseekers’ chart.

Rihanna‘s petulant ‘Rude Boy’ has taken #1 position in Australia, making it her first #1 single here since ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ three years ago.

It’s hardly in the league of her previous chart toppers like, ‘SOS (Rescue Me)’ and ‘Umbrella’.

The jury’s still out on whether this ‘edgy’ record is my cup of tea or not. I find myself indifferent to most tracks on Rated R.

George Michael‘s hits collection Twenty Five jumped from #24 to #9 this week. Last week’s tour must’ve jogged our memories because kinky sex aside, George did have some wonderful songs.

Nothing beats ‘Fastlove’ for me – it was the first George Michael song I heard and back then innocent Dave was oblivious to the overt sexual connotations.

Ellie Goulding must be chuffed to see her debut album enter the UK charts at #1 this week. Interesting to see Lights knock off Lady Gaga‘s beast of a hit album at the height of her Monster Ball tour.

Alphabeat‘s 90s pop-inspired The Beat Is debuted at #39 in the UK this week. Wondering if I should hold my breath for a local release or shall I just order my copy from CD WOW now?

Avril Lavigne‘s ‘Alice’ entered the UK charts at #75 this week. Only time will tell if this will reignite her career or fall through the rabbit hole.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce‘s ‘Telephone’ climbs to an all new peak of #12 on the US Billboards chart. It has been the longest wait for the music video, this shit had better be bonkers and mind-blowing. Word is the official premiere date is 11 March.

Gabriella Cilmi’s ‘On A Mission’ Video Notes:

Three things you need to know about Gabriella Cilmi‘s new video ‘On A Mission’:

1) She wants you to know she’s a woman now. See cleavage flash at the 0:46 mark.

2) The cape is a nice touch. This could’ve been the theme song for the Wonder Woman TV series if it had continued into the 80s.

3) Hello random 80s cartoon hands pushing the controls! (1:53 mark)

Footnotes: Kudos to our young Gabi for refreshing her sound. Where I slightly resented her for pilfering Girls Alouds‘ sound for her debut album, this I can live with.

When I read that Gabi has gone disco, I caught a vision of Donna Summer‘s ‘Love To Love You Baby’. But this strangely sounds more like 80s mullet rock a la ‘We Built This City’.

As much as I love ‘On A Mission’, I still wonder if this song is bordering on bogan chic.

But in any case, I’m sure it was acceptable in the 80s
